After being selected for Toronto Nationals in the Global T20 League, Manpreet Gony, like his Punjab teammate Yuvraj Singh, has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Gony has represented India in two One-day Internationals (ODIs) and had two very good seasons with Chennai Super Kings.

A well-built right-arm pace bowler, Gony’s claim to fame was stirring performances in the 2008 Indian Premier League in which he emerged as Chennai's leading wicket-taker and the fourth highest overall. However, he frittered away from the Indian cricketing circuit as soon as he reached and eventually had to be content with playing for Punjab in the domestic cricket.

However, a more than a decade long career saw an end as Gony decided to follow his fellow Punjab cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s path as he decided to ply trades in the Global T20 Canada. Coincidentally, Gony has also been signed by the Toronto Nationals in the player draft to play in the second season of the league, commencing on July 25.

Gony represented India in two One-day Internationals (ODIs), besides playing 61 first-class matches, 55 List-A matches and 90 T20 matches in his domestic career for Punjab, North Zone, and India A. The 35-year-old made his ODI debut against Hong Kong on June 25, 2008 and played his final ODI against Bangladesh June 28, the same year and has never been close to selection ever since.

Gony still holds the joint record for bowling the most number of maiden overs in a single T20 (3), and in the Indian Premier League, he was a regular fixture for many years. After being bought by Chennai Super Kings from 2008 to 2010, he was bought by the now-defunct Deccan Chargers for the 2011-12 season. Later in the career, he had later turned for Kings XI Punjab and Gujarat Lions.

Commenting on Gony's retirement, Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) spokesperson Sushil Kapoor said: "Manpreet Singh Gony had been potent weapon in the armory of Punjab pace attack for many years. PCA management wishes him a happy and purposeful retired life."
