When MS Dhoni appeals, either you give that as out or you review the decision. Nitin Menon followed the “rule” as he decided to go upstairs after Kedar Jadhav appealed for a low caught-behind for which MS Dhoni was confident that it was a catch, but it turned out to be a horrible appeal.

For the first time since the Guwahati ODI against the Windies, Indian bowlers have failed to pick at least a couple of wickets inside the first 10 overs, but they did the containing job to perfection to make sure that Australia didn’t break free. That helped as India turned to Kedar Jadhav to break the partnership and he created a chance that fooled literally everyone but the camera.

In the 19th over, Jadhav, with his typically slingy action, bowled a ball into him against which Marcus Stoinis came down the track to get close to the pitch of the ball so as to drill it back to the bowler. It was so fast that no one could mark whether it was a catch or was it dropped off the surface because MS Dhoni was loud in his appeal. The bowler, seeing that Dhoni was confident, instantly appealed for it which confused Nitin Menon.

Menon, after a bit of consultation with his partner Joel Menon, decided to go upstairs to check that where third umpire Kumar Dharmasena found out that the ball had very clearly bounced off the wicket before going to Jadhav’s hands. While the umpire should have spotted the decision quite easily as it was not a bump ball, it was evident the kind of power MS Dhoni wields on the 22 yards of the battlefield.
