MS Dhoni’s street smarts and game acumen are so strong that his appeal has become the default signal for dismissal for umpires world over. Today, the former Indian skipper was at his best as after effecting a caught behind dismissal, he tried to stump Shaun Marsh on the same ball.

After India were brought back into the game by Kuldeep Yadav and Kedar Jadhav, Australia were pushed to the corner and it required Shaun Marsh, Australia’s best batsman against spinners, to launch an assault. However, with Dhoni behind the stumps, it was always going to be that one ball and rightfully, it came on the penultimate ball of the 24th over.

Ravindra Jadeja managed to spin the ball down the leg-side after bowling a flattish delivery to Marsh, who had no way of leaving it. However, Marsh shuffled across the stumps and got inside the line in an attempt to tickle it, but ended up having a faint edge on it.

Dhoni was standing close to the stumps and he moved with the turn - from off to the leg-side - and took the catch easily. Once he started appealing, Marsh started walking back as he knew that he had an edge. But the striking aspect of the game was the way Dhoni approached it. While appealing, he, unassumingly, tried effecting a stumping and managed to get the stumps down in right time. While Nitin Menon had his finger up in a flash, Dhoni even appealed looking at Kumar Dharmasena a few seconds later.
