VIDEO | Controversy ensues in Ranchi as ball tracking deviates by couple of inches from reality

While technology has seeped deep into cricket to make the game more interesting and accurate, it is just a shame that the technology has so many flaws in it. Today, after Aaron Finchā€™s dismissal, this came to the fore as ball tracking data deviated by a couple of inches from the actual spot.

Finch played a brilliant innings in the third ODI, making sure that the Indian team was under pressure throughout the first half of the first innings. The authoritativeness with which he batted was just a spectacle, but the way it ended it brought a lot of questions regarding the usage of the technology to the fore.

On the fifth ball of the 32nd over, Kuldeep Yadav bowled a quicker delivery and given the fact that he was taking him down all those while, he went by instinct and didnā€™t make any change to his technique. When he went right back and tried to nudge it on the on-side, the ball pinned him on his pads in front of the leg-stump.Ā

Indians, who were frustrated by then, were loud in their appeal and the umpire instantly obliged by raising his finger. However, Finch was confident that he was given out wrongly, and went upstairs to check it again. The ball-tracking clearly showed that the ball pitched in between the middle and off-stump, but the trajectory viewer had something else to say.

The trajectory dipped exactly at the leg-stump line and went on to smash the stumps. While there is no doubt to the fact that it was a clear dismissal, it also made one thing clear that the case would have been different had it been in some other case. In case the ball tracking would have shownĀ the pitching outside the leg-stump, then what would have been the actual measure? James Neesham pointed this out on Twitter and questioned the fairness of the process involved.

ā€œFinch LBW. Are we just gonna ignore the fact that ball tracking had it pitching in a totally different place to reality? I saw it pitching middle, maybe even middle and off. Ball tracking had it pitching on theĀ leg. Still out but pretty weird.
