Eoin Morgan has stated that there is a lot of belief in the England dressing room about them winning the World Cup. The hosts have been regarded as the favourites to lift the trophy by almost every analyst and they will look to start their campaign on a winning note against South Africa today.

England played 24 ODIs in 2018 and ended up winning 17 of them and they extended it to this year too, as they have won seven out of 11 matches. Given that the World Cup is being played in England, the top-ranked side are tagged as the favourites to lift their first ever trophy of the quadrennial event. Expectedly, there is a lot of belief in the dressing room too, as pointed out by Eoin Morgan.

“It’s difficult to describe (the team’s mood) unless you actually hear them say it, but I think there’s a lot of belief within the (dressing)  room. We’re very confident within our own game,” Morgan said, reported Cricbuzz.

“We spoke about it as a group, the level of expectations and favourites tag is there for a reason. Over the last two years, our form at home, in particular, has been outstanding and that’s the reason it’s there. A lot of World Cups that I’ve played in, we have gone in very little expectations and not done that well. I’d pick this position over any other,” he added.

Pacer Mark Wood pulled his troublesome ankle during his fourth over of the warm-up match against Australia on Saturday. The Durham bowler was subsequently declared fit but there were speculations that he might not feature in the opening encounter against South Africa at The Oval today. The skipper has put to rest to all such discussions and has stated that the team has no injury concerns.

“I am good and team is very well. We have no injury concerns, everybody is full of health and excited for tomorrow,” revealed the 32-year-old.

England is the birthplace of cricket but still the nation has never won the showpiece event. The Irish born cricketer reckoned that winning it will inspire many kids to take up the sport.

“It (winning the World Cup) will mean a huge amount. The World Cup alone raises the profile of the game and it is a platform for every young kid in this country to have a hero or inspiration to pick up a ball or a bat. So to go on and win, I couldn’t imagine what it would do,” Morgan signed off.
