I feel the time is now right for me to move on from my role at the ECB, says Mark Ramprakash
England cricket team’s head batting coach Mark Ramprakash will resign from his position in June in order to explore new avenues, the cricketing board confirmed on Friday. The former batsman released a statement saying how honoured he was to have held the position but it is now time that he move on.
A gifted player of his time with more than a 100 first-class centuries, Mark Ramprakash had replaced Graham Gooch as the country’s lead batting coach in 2014, though, by then, he had already been working with the nation’s second tier team for a couple of years. Though his tenure didn’t start the way he would have been expecting with a disastrous 2015 World Cup, he since has taken the team from strength to strength including the team posting a record ODI total of 481/6 last year.
"I feel the time is now right for me to move on from my role at the ECB and seek to further and broaden my career. The last six years have been a hugely enjoyable time of my life. In that time, I have been privileged to be able to support encourage and mentor the Young Lions, England Lions and the England Test and ODI teams,” Ramprakash said in a statement.
Only 49-year-old, this was only his second coaching job having coach Middlesex before, and he has a long career ahead of him. As a batsman, he never quite fulfilled his potential on the international stage and yet has 50+ Test caps to his name. As far as the domestic circuit is concerned, he remains one of the best batsmen First Class cricket has ever seen.
"I wish the ECB and England cricket team all the best for the future,” Ramprakash concluded.
