Sri Lanka's Kusal Mendis and Shehan Jayasuriya are unlikely to feature in the third and final T20I against New Zealand after suffering leg injuries in the second T20I on Tuesday. The duo had an unfortunate collision near the boundary which resulted in the team conceding six runs.

With the visitors needing seven runs to win off the final over bowled by leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, things could not have started any better for the hosts. A well set Tom Bruce was run out for 53 off the first ball, while Daryl Mitchell was caught at long-on off the second. Then, Mitchell Santner heaved on over to the leg side and unfortunately for the Lankans, Jayasuriya who caught it cleanly tripped over his teammate and into the boundary ropes. The umpire signalled a six, and Santner finished off the job the very next ball with a boundary to the same region of the field.

Mendis suffered an injury on his right knee while Jayasuriya has sustained an injury above the knee on his right leg after the collision. Team manager Asantha De Mel was quoted saying by Cricbuzz that they are unlikely to feature in the third and final T20I. Mendis was sent for an MRI scan on Wednesday and the reports are expected later in the day.

New Zealand won the game and sealed the series 2-0, with the third game to be played on Friday (September 6) at the same venue. The SLC media statement released on Wednesday also mentioned that Sri Lanka has opted against any replacements for the injured players.
