Rivalry and competitiveness are essential traits in cricket but it does not rule out moments that uphold the spirit of the game. Such was the scene in the Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad game where Pat Cummins showed great spirit by denying Ravindra Jadeja’s obstruction of the field.

The Chennai Super Kings faced an uncertain start when they lost their star opener Rachin Ravindra in the fourth over. Nevertheless, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane steadied the ship, guiding their side to 48/1 by the end of the powerplay. Following Gaikwad’s departure in the eighth over, Shivam Dube and Rahane bolstered the CSK batting lineup. The pair constructed a formidable 65-run partnership, propelling their team to 115/2 after 13 overs. However, the home team's bowlers exhibited impressive prowess by swiftly dismissing both batsmen. As Ravindra Jadeja and Daryl Mitchell were in charge of the slog over with the bat, a noteworthy moment unfolded showcasing the cricketing spirit from SRH skipper Cummins.

In the 19th over, Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivered a yorker to Jadeja, who blocked it and prepared to take a single. However, Mitchell, from the opposite end, declined the run, prompting Bhuvneshwar to retrieve the ball. As he prepared to throw, the ball struck Jadeja's back as he attempted to return to the crease. Subsequently, SRH wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen nodded his head to deny a wicket via 'obstructing the field', despite a possible opportunity to break the stand. On-field umpires Rohan Pandit and Yeshwant Barde deliberated the incident, but Cummins intervened, dismissing the obstruction of field appeal as Jadeja resumed his position to take his strike.

As per the MCC laws, " A batter shall not be out Obstructing the field if the obstruction or distraction is accidental,or the obstruction is in order to avoid injury,or in the case of the striker, he/she makes a second or subsequent strike to guard his/her wicket lawfully as in Law 34.3 (Ball lawfully struck more than once)."

The cricketing community on Twitter praised Cummins for his decision highlighting the spirit of the game.
