Men’s Hundred | Twitter reacts to Powerpacked Powell dent table-toppers to end season with pride
Trent Rockets beat the Oval Invincibles by six wickets with as many balls to spare in their last game of the Men’s Hundred. Dawid Malan’s half-century coupled with top-order domination was not enough to eclipse Rovman Powell and Tom Aslop’s impactful numbers as the Rockets emerged victorious.
Choosing to bat first after winning the toss worked well for the Oval Invincibles as Will Jacks and Dawid Malan racked up 40 runs inside the powerplay. Although the former’s 17-ball 30 runs assault came to an end on the 32nd ball, Jordan Cox’s introduction helped the Invincibles extend their merry-making with the bat. Malan switched gears slowly and steadily, consolidating a 71-run stand for the second wicket. The duo steered them to 100 runs mark on the 73rd ball after which Cook returned to get the better of Cox for 39. However, Donavon Ferreira entered the fray and whacked a hattrick of sixes to steer the Invincibles to 150/3 by extracting 27 runs off the last ten balls following Malan’s fifty.
In response, the Trent Rockets lost a wicket early as Tom Banton departed on the sixth ball off Saqib Mahmood. However, Alex Hales countered the opposition bowlers with his attacking approach with Root holding one end and propelling them to a 30-run powerplay. However, Hales’ assault didn’t last long with Will Jacks trapping him leg before wicket in the eighth set. Ten balls later, Joe Root departed back to the pavilion before Tom Aslop stabilised the stage with Rovman Powell. The latter took on the wrist spinners during the middle overs and produced some massive blows to reduce the equation to 24 required off the last three sets. The Caribbean all-rounder smoked his fourth six off the innings against Sam Curran in the next set before the bowler had the last laugh, reducing the score to 15 needed off the last ten balls. With a no-ball six and wide following, set batter Aslop managed to smack a four to eventually steer the side past the finishing line with six wickets in hand.
