Former Indian batter, VVS Laxman is set for a contract extension as the head of National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru after his tenure ends in September. It is learned that the Hyderabad-bred turned down an IPL franchise offer of the head coach’s role to prioritize the position in NCA.

Appointed as the NCA head in December 2021, Laxman’s three-year tenure ends in September 2024. Although an IPL franchise reached out to him for the head coach position, his extension in the NCA contract would bar him from being a part of the glitterati league.

The 49-year-old is likely to be assisted by Indian domestic stalwarts, Shitanshu Kotak, Sairaj Bahutule, and Hrishikesh Kanitkar in his role. As ESPNcricinfo reported, the extension in term is at least by a year.

Laxman’s tenure extension is likely to be followed by the inauguration of the new-of-the-art NCA campus on the outskirts of Bengaluru. After 14 years since the land was sanctioned by the Karnataka Government on a 99-year lease, construction of the new campus finally commenced in January 2022. Now nearing completion, the campus is set to be inaugurated in 2025.

The new premise is learned to be equipped with at least 100 pitches, indoor facilities with 45 strips, Olympic-sized pools, modern rehab centre, lodging center, among others. With Laxman heading the NCA, the new campus is likely to be operational from next year.

In his tenure thus far, the Indian veteran thoroughly looked after the players’ rehabilitation, injury management, coaching programs, and created a blueprint of the age group, women, and senior group cricket.
