As a human being, individuals are often governed by their past actions, and when they let old habits and mistakes dictate their present decisions, it can ultimately lead to their downfall. Joe Root suffered a similar fate after notching up his 33rd Test century in the second Test against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka’s ploy to field first was welcomed with open arms by English skipper Ollie Pope but the top-order failed to walk the talk, losing a couple of wickets in the first hour of play. However, Joe Root stabilised the stage with brisk assistance from Ben Duckett and the English middle order to help them steer past the 300-run mark. Racking up a brilliant ton, Root tried to accelerate the score, culminating in his downfall, courtesy of a reverse scoop that he avoided executing in the majority of the last couple of months. 

On the third ball of the 78th over, Milan Ratnayake bowled a length delivery around the fourth stump that the right-handed batter intended to reverse scoop by squaring up across the line. However, Root incurred a top-edge in the attempt and the ball skewed towards the short third man region where Pathum Nissanka took a regulation catch. 

Despite acting as a bridge in England’s commanding total with an outstanding century, the 33-year-old was seen fuming after his dismissal. He avoided playing the stroke on numerous cases this summer after his repeated failure against India in winter. The Twitterverse spotted it and was left in a frenzy after the failed attempt to execute his trademark stroke.
