To get a batter averaging 55 in Test cricket out with a corker as a rookie is the stuff of dreams but to manage the feat twice in a matter of minutes is the stuff of legends. Brydon Carse earned such legacy in Wellington on Friday after a no-ball call earned Kane Williamson a reprieve.

E‌ngland ended Day 1 on top at the Basin Reserve in the second Test as 15 wickets fell in just 80.4 overs on Friday. The visitors were asked to bat first and scrambled their way to 280 on the back of another Harry Brook ton and Ollie Pope's 66 while Nathan Smith scalped four, before a scalp each for Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, and Ben Stokes as well as two for Brydon Carse reduced the Black Caps to 86/5 at the close of play. New Zealand could have been placed even worse at Stumps had fortune not allowed the time a lucky reprieve earlier but Carse's willingness ultimately managed to trump through the adversity.

In the 14th over of the Kiwis' innings, Carse pitched a ball on length from over the stumps angling into Williamson that pitched and straightened ever so slightly to beat the outside edge and rattle into the off-stump. Carse was ecstatic with the attempt and immediately wheeled away celebrating while his teammates mobbed him all over te park, only for the jubilation to cut short prematurely by the umpire's extended home signalling a no-ball. Kane, batting on 20 at the time, could not help but flash a sheepy smile to further add salt to the English's wounds. Little did he know payback was due soon.

By the time Kane had trudged along to 37, Carse returned for one final spell to before Stumps but needed just two deliveries to make his statement. The right-arm quick piched another ball on length, this one outside off stump and with a hint of momvemet to gain Kane's outside edge that was caught excellently by Tom Blundell with the gloves.

Kane was distraught at having spurne d agolden opporutnity to capitalize and Twitterati sympathized with him.

What a luck and bad luck!
