BBL | Twitter reacts to Henriques Hurricance pummel Gades as Sixers kick off season with home game win
Sydney Sixers beat the Melbourne Renegades by four wickets in hand and open their winning account in their tournament opener. Will Sutherland’s all-round excellence and Tim Seifert’s fifty was eclipsed by James Vince and Moises Henriques' calculative play as Sixers seal the deal at home.
Eyeing to kick off their tournament on a high, Sydney Sixers won the toss and elected to bowl first. Jake Fraser-McGurk and Josh Brown opened the innings for the Renegades and got a brisk start before the former fell in the third over. Under Tim Seifert’s presence, Brown flourished with a 10-ball 22 before getting dismissed with 60 runs in six overs. Mackenzie Harvey, Laurie Evans, and Hassan Khan failed to shine but Siefert kept ticking the scorecard, reaching his maiden fifty for the franchise. WIll Sutherland aided him with a 28-ball 36 helping the Sixers get 169 runs in 20 overs.
In response, Tom Rogers got the better of Joshua Philippe in the second over before James Vince and Jack Edwards knitted an important partnership, powering them to a 44-run mandatory powerplay. Vince seemed comfortable against the run of play but Edwards failed to capitalise on looseners and eventually departed for 28-ball 37 in the tenth over with the score of 82/2. With Vince commanding the chase in a calculative manner, a special delivery was needed to outwit him and Will Sutherland did as the doctor ordered. He cleaned up the English batter in the twelfth over, making way for a couple of more scalps and Hayden Kerr’s retired out by the 16th over with the score 136/6. However, Henriques turned the tables with his neat ball-striking that included a 16-run 18th over concluding a 26 runs power surge. With just eight to get from the last couple of overs, Ben Dwarshuis went gung-ho as a six and a four chalked out the chase with four wickets in hand.
