Daren Sammy appointed as all-format coach of West Indies
Former West Indies captain Daren Sammy has been appointed as the all-format coach of the West Indies cricket team. As announced by Cricket West Indies (CWI) director of cricket Miles Bascombe in St Vincent, the current white ball coach will replace Andre Coley for the red-ball duties.
The West Indies cricket team has tasted huge success under Sammy’s leadership as a cricketer and stewardship of the current side. They showcased brilliant performances during the 2024 T20 World Cup, which was staged in the United States of America and the Caribbean islands. They won all their games during the group stage before being eliminated in the Super Eight stage despite showing a daunting performance.
"It's always an honour to represent West Indies in any format or any position. For me, this news is not something I was expecting. Coaching was never something I saw myself doing but I must admit the way that it's been going, I've developed a much stronger passion and a love for the job. I believe in processes, something that we've been able to do in the white-ball formats, and with this new role, I've already mapped out some of the areas and some of the processes that we'll have to follow in order for us to be successful [in Test cricket]. I'm a patient man and once I trust that process and understand the requirement from the director of cricket, then the plan gets into action,” Sammy expressed during the press conference.
Under Sammy’s coaching, the West Indies won T20I series against India, England, and South Africa at home while losing away series against Australia, and Sri Lanka, and a home series against England. They’ve participated in 28 ODIs and won 15 of them since 2023. However, the red-ball performance hasn’t been up to the mark, losing seven games since May 2023 under Coley. They won and drew a couple of matches including the famous Gabba win against Australia in January.
Sammy is also a two-time T20 World Cup winner, the only captain to earn the feat in International cricket. He also won several franchise tourneys as a coach and would hope to reshape the way the Men in Maroon go about their business in whites.
