BBL | Twitter reacts to Connolley’s heroics in vain as Rogers three-fer stampede fighting Scorchers
The Melbourne Renegades make it back-to-back wins after defeating the Perth Scorchers by two wickets. Tom Rogers made the most out of the bowling-friendly conditions by scalping a three-fer and a complete team effort in the batting unit helped the hosts chalk down 143 runs at the Docklands Stadium.
The ploy to field first and capitalise on the moisture paid off for the home side as Finn Allen was a goner on the third ball of the innings itself. Right after, Keaton Jennings and Cooper Connolly were troubled by the massive seam movements for a prolonged period with the former falling prey to a misfortunate runout. With 16/2 in five overs, Connolly fell short of partners with Josh Inglis and Ashton Turner departing in the seventh and ninth over. With time, the lateral movements minimized and the batters maneuvered the field to propel the score to 58/4 in twelve overs. Connolly and debutant Matthew Spoors struck a six each in the next couple of overs followed by Adam Zampa’s six-run 15th over. As the score read 84/4 in 15 overs, the pair opted for the Power Surge, leading to Spoors’ downfall at 29. Subsequently, Tom Rogers removed Nick Hobson and Ashton Agar in the 19th over amidst Connolly’s marvelous strokes before the southpaw succumbed in the last over, albeit pushing the score to 143/8 in 20 overs.
In response, the openers of the Gades lost a couple of wickets in the form of their trusted openers, inside the powerplay. However, the run rate didn’t seize, courtesy of Tim Seifert’s 14-ball 28 runs cameo. With the surface on the slower side, Jacob Bethell’s 30 and Laurie Evan’s 24 set up for the chase before the Scorchers made inroads with the ball. They lost half their wickets by the eleventh over with the score reading 103. The ask was always within the hosts’ limits but tight bowling and a couple of wickets helped the Scorchers take the game deep, to the 18th over. With six needed from a couple of overs and Will Sutherland at one end, it was just a matter of time before the Gades emerge on the top and win by a couple of wickets.
Tactical
Ashton Turner is the best tactical captain in our country by the length of the Flemington straight. Hence why the Scorchers are the best in the big bash. Well played tonight also by a maturing Will Sutherland to hold his nerve to guide his team home.
