WI vs UGA | Akeal's sensational new-ball fifer whittles out Cranes for record-low 39 in huge Windies win
West Indies hardly broke a sweat to dominate Uganda by 134-runs in typical Guyanese conditions, featuring low bounce and plenty of swing. The hosts batted first to put up a commanding 173/5 on the board before Akeal Hosein's brilliant fifer with the new ball practically sealed the encounter.
Brief score: WI 173/5 (20) [Charles 44(42), Russell 30*(17); Masaba 2/31(4)] defeat UGA 39 (12) [Miyagi 13*(20), Obuya 6(8); Hosein 5/11(4)] by 134 runs
After opting to bat first, West Indies raced to 54/1 in the powerplay despite losing Brandon King for cheap on the back of a flurry of boundaries from the bats of Johnson Charles and Nicholas Pooran. However, the duo were restrained by disciplined lines and lengths from the Cranes once the field spread out, culminating in Pooran top-edging a Brian Masaba delivery at the halfway stage to depart for a 17-ball 22. Meanwhile, Charles continued to soak up the dots and after failing to dispatch a few looseners, succumbed to the pressure six short of a half-century. A couple of quick cameos from Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford were nipped in the bud quickly enough by Uganda followed by an exhibition of death bowling by their pacers, until the last over. Cosmos Kyewuta repeatedly missed the mark with the daunting figure of Andre Russell up against him and was duly punished for 18 runs to take the hosts' total to 173/5.
In the second innings, it was through and through the Akeal Hosein show as Uganda appeared clueless against the peculiarities of the spinner's unique blend of spin and swing bowling. The veteran ripped a few off the deck and made the shiny new Kookaburra talk in the air on other occasions en route to a fifer for the ages, crippling down the African outfit to 23/7 by the end of the seventh over. Tailender Juma Miyagi ended up as the only batter to cross into double digits and it wasn't long before Uganda folded out for 39, the joint-lowest total in tournament history.
