‌Good beginnings don’t necessarily guarantee a rosy ending, as was the case with Rohit Sharma in India’s Super Eight clash against Australia. The Indian skipper’s flamboyant approach took him to the nineties before Mitchell Starc produced a jaffa to silence the Indian audience in St Lucia.

Despite losing the toss and suffering an early jolt in the form of Virat Kohli, the Indian unit chalked up quick runs inside the field restrictions, courtesy of a Rohit Sharma carnage. The 37-year-old assaulted the opposition bowlers left, right, and center, racing to a 19-ball fifty inside the powerplay. He persisted with a similar approach during the middle overs and scurried to the nineties before Starc redeemed for leaking 34 runs in his initial two overs.

Rohit’s score read 89 when India’s scoreboard reflected 114/1 halfway through the first innings. With a double and a single in the next over, he reached the ninety-run mark before facing Starc in the twelfth over. A short of a length delivery was followed up with a yorker at the base of the stumps that Rohit wished to slog over the mid-wicket region. However, the Mumbaikar failed to middle it, getting a faint inside edge back to the pad and onto the stumps. The Australian quick was pumped up after curbing an on-song Rohit eight runs short of a century, thus silencing the Indian audience at the venue and sending the Twitterverse into a frenzy.
