WI vs SA | Twitter shudders as Rabada spears into Jansen to cause potent boundary collision
A strong crowd gathered in Antigua on Monday to witness a fierce clash between two giants and got just that, albeit a tad more literally than expected. The lanky Marco Jansen was left completely winded on the boundary ropes after being rammed into by his Proteas teammate Kagiso Rabada.
South Africa got off to a strong start in the virtual quarterfinal at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium with two early wickets but the Windies consolidated well thereafter through a steady partnership between Kyle Mayers and Roston Chase. The pair ensured the scoring rate did not lag by delivering an occasional boundary-clearing bomb amidst the singles and doubles but little did they imagine the strategy would result in the opposition's two premier pacers becoming collateral damage.
The incident in question occurred on the penultimate ball of the eighth over when Aiden Markram had the ball in hand against Mayers. The Proteas skipper floated the ball full on middle and leg and his counterpart did not need a second invitation to tonk it down the ground. However, Mayers failed to get enough behind the ball and it soared high into the night sky with both Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabda converging under it from long-off and ling-on respectively. A catch could have been on the cards as the former sprung off his foot with his long levers extended behind him and eyes fixated on the Kookaburra. However, his teammate failed to bail out in time, and ended up spearing into the torso of the all-rounder, resulting in both collapsing in a heap on either side of the boundary rope. While Rabada got up to his knees for a moment before going under again, Jansen remained on the ground in a foetal position and an extended physio session followed.
Fortunately for the visitors, both players were able to resume after a considerable break albeit neither took the ball in hand up till at least the 16th over.
