Both Australia and England have been dealt with some major blows ahead of the third Test. While Australia remains in a lead in this series, they might not be much affected with it. But for England, it could be a challenging moment, with every game being a must win.

The Ashes is now up for a break, as both teams prepare for the third Test. Australia, the hosts of the series, surely have the upper hand this time in the Ashes. They have won both of the first two Tests, and with the same margin of 8 wickets. This also makes the next Test important for both teams.

England will have to secure a win in this game to keep their hopes of a series win alive. On the other hand, Australia remains just one match away from securing a series win, which they will be targeting in the next game. But at the same time, both of these teams have been given some major blows ahead of the third Test.

1. Australia Set for a Massive Return

For the Australian cricket team, there is good news and bad news at the same time. Let's first start with the good news, which is that Pat Cummins is now all set to return for the third Test. This also means Steve Smith will no longer be the captain of the team, and their main skipper, Pat Cummins will be coming back to the line-up.

Cummins missed out on action for the last few months due to an injury which he sustained in the series against the West Indies. He was supposed to return for the first Test, but it took time for his recovery due to which Steve Smith was named as a replacement captain. Along with that, he also missed out on the second Test, as he prepared himself for all these days.

Pat Cummins in The Ashes:

  • Innings: 36
  • Overs: 693.3
  • Maidens: 143
  • Wickets: 91
  • Average: 24.10
  • Economy: 3.16
  • Five-wicket Hauls: 2

And now, Pat Cummins will be coming back to The Ashes. While Australia is yet to announce its squad for the third Test, it is reported that Pat Cummins will return to the team as a captain. And this will be a major boost to the Australian side, as Cummins will be adding experience to the team along with Mitchell Starc.

For the bad news, the Australian bowling trio will not be seen in this series. This also means Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc won't be there together even for the remaining of these games in the series. Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the Ashes due to the injury which he sustained in the Sheffield Shield.

2. Setback for England

Things are not going in England's way as far as the first two Tests in the series. They have started off with consecutive losses which makes every game a must win for them. But at the same time, the team has been dealt with a major blow as one of their bowlers has been ruled out of the series.

And it is Mark Wood. The fast paced bowler has now been ruled out of the remainder of the series, despite being among the top contributors in the first two games. Fans remain eager to see who comes in as a replacement for Mark Wood for the English team, as they remain eager to improve their bowling line-up.

It should be noted that in place of Mark Wood, Matthew Fisher has been added to the line-up. He is also with the English team right now in Australia, and remains an experienced pacer in the English domestic. The main question remains who will join Jofra Archer as the primary bowler for England in the remaining three games. Wood will be going back to the ECB, to recover from his left knee injury.

3. The Ashes Till Now

Like any other Ashes, this one has also been fantastic in the first two Tests. Australia has held the upper hand in the series, as the hosts have won the first two games without any issues. Mitchell Starc still remains a force to be reckoned with, as he won the Player of the Match award in both of these matches.

Along with that, Australia was able to win both games with the same margin (8 wickets). Travis Head (199) remains the top run scorer for Australia, while Joe Root (161) remains the top scorer for England. Moreover, this time, The Ashes has been different, with Joe Root scoring a century for the very first time in Australia.
