As the Indian team closes into the T20 World Cup 2026, the form of Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav raises concerns. Abhishek Sharma, the Number One ranked ICC batsman has backed both of them. The Indian opener talked about them after India took a 2-1 lead in the third T20I.
India was able to take a lead against South Africa in the third T20I. But it was a day for the bowlers, as the Proteas were bowled out for just 117 runs. With a pitch having tough conditions for the batsmen, Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav tried their best to regain their form for the Indian team.
But their performances were not as good as expected by the team and fans. Eventually, this has increased the number of questions being raised on them ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, where India enters as the defending champions. At this moment, India's opening batsman, Abhishek Sharma, has backed both of them.
1. Abhishek Sharma on Gill and SKY
India was able to secure a win against South Africa by 7 wickets, which gave them a 2-1 lead in the series. The target was low, as the Indian bowlers did a great job to restrict the Proteas at 117. At this moment, fans expected Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill to finish the game as early as possible. Abhishek started off well, and finished scoring 38 runs off 15 balls.
His start helped Shubman Gill to play well for sometime, after which he also lost his wicket. Gill scored just 28 runs at a strike rate of 100. While Tilak Varma held the other end, the skipper, Suryakumar Yadav tried to finish the game but failed. He ended up losing his wicket to Lungi Ngidi, falling for a score of just 12 runs off 11 balls.
Despite being dismissed first, Abhishek Sharma was India's top run scorer. He also came for an interview, where he talked about the form of Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill.
Abhishek Sharma said, “Trust me Shubman Gill & Suryakumar Yadav will win matches for India in World Cup & matches before the WC as well. Especially with Shubman. I know where Shubman can excel, in what conditions & irrespective of the opponent, I have full trust in him. Very soon, everyone else will gain that trust in him as well.”
This shows the confidence of Indian players towards each other. Since the T20 World Cup will be played majorly in India, it will be important for the team to have Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav to regain their form. Suryakumar Yadav also talked about how necessary it is for him to regain his form before the big tournament.
2. Gill’s Slump in Form
Shubman Gill has been doing well for the Indian team in the other formats of the game. But he has not been able to stay at his very best in the T20I format. After being excluded from the T20I side for months, Shubman Gill finally made his comeback to the team in the Asia Cup 2025. He returned as the vice captain of the team, and fans had a lot of expectations from him.
Shubman Gill in T20Is in 2025:
- Innings: 15
- Not Out: 3
- Runs: 291
- Average: 24.25
- Strike Rate: 137.26
- 100s: 0
- 50s: 0
But Gill has not been able to deliver as well as he could in the shortest format of the game. Still, it should be noted that Shubman Gill is the highest run scorer in international cricket this year, combining runs of all formats. While he has been strong in Tests and ODIs, his T20I form concerns the Indian team and fans the most.
3. Suryakumar’s Declining Form
It is not only the vice captain of the Indian team who is experiencing a slump in his form. The same also goes for the Indian captain, Suryakumar Yadav. While he has done well with his captaincy, putting India at the top in all the T20I series. It should be noted that India also won the T20 Asia Cup under his captaincy.
Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is in 2025:
- Innings: 18
- Not Out: 3
- Runs: 213
- Average: 14.20
- Strike Rate: 125.29
- 100s: 0
- 50s: 0
But the contribution of the Indian skipper with the bat has been minimal. He remained the ICC number one batsman for a while in 2022, but he has not been able to register even a single half-century in 2025. With the T20 World Cup 2026 coming close, Suryakumar Yadav also knows how important it is for him to be back at his best.
He also said, “See, the thing is I've been batting beautifully in the nets. I am trying everything I can, what's in my control. When the runs have to come, they'll definitely come. I am looking for runs. Not out of form, but definitely out of runs.”
