The IPL auction has ended, and several experienced players have also gone unsold. It was seen that various IPL teams went to go with the new talents to make the season more exciting. But Aakash Chopra has expressed his concern, as an experienced all-rounder goes unsold.

This time the IPL auction has given more shocks to the fans than any other. It all started from the first set, where only two players were sold, and the remaining went to the second round of the auction. Several players found new teams in the second auction, but many of them still remained unsold, such as Jake Fraser-McGurk, Devon Conway, and more.

A few names in this list were expected by the fans to go unsold. But there were some names which they expected to be targeted by the teams, noting their experience and stats in the IPL and T20s. Even Aakash Chopra, the famous cricket analyst, has expressed his concern on the unsold players, as he thought they would be sold in big numbers, before the auction.

1. Aakash Targets CSK on Missing this Player

Taking a look at the decisions made by Chennai Super Kings in the auction, Aakash Chopra was a bit shocked. Although the team looks packed with experience, they still have picked several young talents with almost no experience in the IPL. What shocked Aakash Chopra the most was the choices made by the team in its spin department.

He thinks that Chennai Super Kings should have gone for Michael Bracewell, the New Zealand all-rounder, in the auction. Bracewell had a base price of 2 crore, but he didn't attract any bidders in the auction. It was a great opportunity for Chennai Super Kings to go for the spin all-rounder, but the team decided not to pick him in the line-up.

And now, in Chennai’s spin bowling line-up, the team has Rahul Chahar, Prashant Veer, and Akeal Hosein. Not only Aakash Chopra, various other cricket analysts were shocked that the team did not go for Michael Bracewell in the auction. For this, Aakash even posted a video on his YouTube channel, analysing the auction.

Michael Bracewell in T20s:

  • Innings: 105
  • Overs: 294.1
  • Wickets: 96
  • Average: 25.20
  • Economy: 8.22
  • Four-wicket Hauls: 2

He said, “I don't know what's wrong with the IPL. There is a player named Michael Bracewell. Don't know why no one rates him. He is a phenomenal player. I still remember the century he scored against India in Hyderabad.”

Aakash Chopra didn't just target CSK, he also targeted the other teams. He further continued by saying, “Plenty of teams needed an off-spinner batter. I felt Chennai would be interested in him. I felt LSG would be interested in him. At least some team should have been interested in him, but no one was interested. Very, very surprising.”

2. Bairstow Unsold

In the auction, it was expected that the wicket-keepers would be bagging the most. It did happen, but not for the wicket-keeper which the fans expected to get the big bucks. Two overseas players were in the headlines before the auction but it didn't go well for them, as they went unsold. And these were Jonny Bairstow and Jamie Smith.

Jamie Smith in T20s:

  • Innings: 82
  • Not Out: 13
  • Runs: 1687
  • Average: 24.44
  • Strike Rate: 144.31
  • 100s: 0
  • 50s: 9

Aakash Chopra spoke on Jamie Smith, as he was also unhappy for the aggressive English batsman to have gone unsold. He said, “Jamie Smith, how did he go unsold? He came three times. Someone put his name every time in the auction list. He was shortlisted for both accelerators, and then no one bought him. It was beyond my understanding. Jamie Smith is a wicketkeeper-batter who bats both up and down the order. He is a gun player, but not to be seen. I am very, very surprised. I have got no logic. Logic has failed here.”

Jonny Bairstow in T20s:

  • Innings: 233
  • Not Out: 36
  • Runs: 6098
  • Average: 30.95
  • Strike Rate: 139.41
  • 100s: 5
  • 50s: 32

He also talked about Jonny Bairstow going unsold. Chopra said, “Logic has failed for Jonny Bairstow. Tim Seifert, Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, Ben Duckett, Pathum Nissanka, Tom Banton and Quinton de Kock got sold, but there is no place for Jonny Bairstow, who played so well in the couple of matches he played last season. He would have been available for the entire season.”
