The Melbourne Stars defeated the Melbourne Renegades by 42 runs at the Marvel Stadium, courtesy of Glenn Maxwell’s 52-ball 90 and Mark Stekette’s five-wicket haul. The heroics dented the hosts as the visitors won four on a trot to leapfrog four rows and sit fourth in the BBL points table.

Eyeing to capitalize on the infamous Melbourne derby and raise the ranks, the Melbourne Renegades elected to field first during the toss. Tom Rogers and Fergus O'Neill were brilliant with the ball after the 31-run powerplay, leaving the Stars reeling at 55/5 in eight overs. This is when Glenn Maxwell arrived at the scene and personified his ‘Big Show’ title with insane power-hitting. The all-rounder unloaded a baggage of tricks with the bat, ripping apart the Gades bowlers with orthodox and unorthodox strokes including a 122-metre majestic six to Kane Richardson. He formed an 81-run eight-wicket stand with Usama Mir with the latter contributing none in five balls that he faced. The 36-year-old’s 52-ball 90 blitz steered the Stars to 165, albeit the tail contributed only ten runs.

Similar to their rivals, the Renegades got off to a poor start as Mark Stekette ripped apart the top order with Joel Paris, utilising the new ball brilliantly. Following 17 runs in the powerplay, Jake Fraser-McGurk’s sluggish 19 off 17 balls concluded as Stekette picked up his third scalp. With 44/4, Tim Seifert and Will Sutherland anchored 32 runs together before the pair departed in the power surge. The Gades lost three between the floating powerplay with the score 81/7 in 14 overs. The tail failed to do wonders as the Renegades lagged with time. Eventually, Stekette claimed a fifer while Paris picked up a three-fer to leave the hosts 42 runs short of the target and seal the Melbourne Derby.
