The pressure of the big stage can often affect decision-making, as it was evident with on-field umpire Ankita Guha on Saturday. She overturned the TV umpire’s decision by mistake during the slog over of the first innings as Delhi Capitals squared off against the Mumbai Indians for the WPL final.

Making their third straight final on as many editions of the WPL, Meg Lanning, the Delhi captain, decided to field first. It’s a captain’s dream to have Marizanne Kapp don the new ball, and so did the South African proved superlative after eeking out two crucial scalps. A 79-run third-wicket stand followed, with Mumbai captain Harmanpreet Kaur scoring a 33-ball fifty. But a tremendous leaping catch from Minnu Mani helped the Capitals get the needed breakthrough, before a collapse followed suit amidst a hilarious umpiring moment.

After baiting Amelia Kerr in the 16th over, Jess Jonassen sprayed a good length delivery that drifted into Sanjeevan Sajana on the last ball. The Kerala batter tried to hack across the line but ended up getting a thud at the pad after being beaten on the bat’s inside edge. Initially, on-field umpire Ankita signaled out before Harman compelled Sajana to go upstairs. The wickets were seen ‘umpires call,’ but the onfield umpire mistakenly signaled it as Not Out before realising her error in a jiffy and gesturing out. The Twitterverse closely watched the final, and realised the pressure of officiating in a final game.
