‌MI vs KKR | Twitter reacts to Ashwani’s dream debut dents Knight Riders as Mumbai find maiden win

Arijit Kundu

The Mumbai Indians defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders by eight wickets in their first home game in the 2025 IPL. A tremendous new ball start was backed by Ashwani Kumar’s four-for as MI overcame a 118-run total on the back of Ryan Rickelton’s 41-ball 64 to bounce back after a couple of defeats.

Although Ajinkya Rahane was happy to lose the toss against the Mumbai Indians, his uncertainty in decision-making carried into the team’s batting. The threatening duo of Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar spit venom with Ashwani Kumar further epitomising the impact. Following a 41-run powerplay, the debutant wreaked havoc into the defending champions’ middle order, with Andre Russell’s bowled being the highlight of all his four-scalps. At one point, it seemed like KKR could struggle to make it to a hundred, but a couple of lusty blows from Ramandeep Singh propelled them to 116.

In reply, the Mumbai Indians got off to a steady start after Ryan Rickelton escaped through Spencer Johnson’s vicious first over. Harshit Rana’s failure to adapt to the new ball in the absence of Vaivhab Arora allowed them to settle with swinging conditions. Although Rohit Sharma struggled for a 13-ball 12, Rickelton’s stroke play helped Mumbai reach 55 inside the powerplay. A 45-run stand with Jacks followed as Rickelton smashed his maiden IPL fifty before Suryakumar Yadav’s 27 at a strike rate of 300 eased the chase with eight wickets in hand.
