Watch, Ranji Trophy | Qamran Iqbal turns provider as ball races to boundary after unintentional deflection

Assists are common in games like football and hockey, but Qamran Iqbal turned provider for Shubham Khajuria during the Ranji Trophy game against Delhi. The Jammu and Kashmir opener accidentally deflected an on-drive from Khajuria before the ball raced to the boundary at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

‌Jammu and Kashmir were sitting pretty at 55/2, chasing 179, on the penultimate day of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group D encounter against Delhi at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Monday. After captain Paras Dogra (106) and Abdul Samad (85) helped the visitors past the 300-run mark to take a lead of 99 runs in the first innings, they tightened the grip on the game with an inspired bowling display in the second essay.

While it was Auqib Nabi who took a fifer in the first innings, it was Vanshaj Sharma who shone with a six-wicket haul to dismiss the home side for 277. The left-arm spinner took 6/68 as Delhi slid from 244/3 to lose their last seven wickets for just 33 runs.

The J&K side started positively with three boundaries coming in Simarjeet Singh’s first over and the hosts’ captain Ayush Badoni turning to spin in the second over itself. Shubham Khajuria came up with a wonderful on-drive off a flighted delivery from left-arm spinner Manan Bhardwaj in the second ball.

In his bid to get back to the crease, Khajuria’s opening partner Qamran Iqbal dragged his bat into the crease. The red cherry hit his bat before changing direction to race to the long off fence.

Simarjeet Singh was all set to stop the ball at mid on just as the perfect, though unintentional, assist came in and benefitted Khajuria. It was too good a hit to end without runs as the precise deviation gave the shot its full value, as four runs were added to the J&K kitty. The deflection reminded of the smart stick work by forwards in hockey to tap the ball into the net.
