New Zealand has always been looked up to as one of the best fielding units in the world, and Will Young underlined that again during the Super Smash game against Canterbury in Christchurch. The Central Districts batter pulled off an extraordinary catch at the boundary to end Henry Nidholls’ stay.

‌Central Districts slipped to their second defeat in a row when they were humbled by Canterbury by 36 runs in the Super Smash in Christchurch on Thursday. Openers Chad Bowes and Tom Latham shone with the bat at the Hagley Oval, scoring 62 off 37 balls and 43 in 26 deliveries, respectively, to help Canterbury to a formidable 194/7 in 20 overs. In reply, the Central Districts endured a collapse up top and in the middle to be restricted to 158/8, though Dean Foxcroft and William Clark came up with crucial contributions with the bat.

Though he finished on the losing side, Will Young had something to cherish as he saw the back of Henry Nicholls with an unbelievable fielding effort. In an attempt to keep the southpaw quiet, Ajaz Patel kept a flatter trajectory and bowled wide of off stump, away from his arc.

But Nicholls still reached for the ball and went ahead with the slog sweep in a bid to thread the gap between mid wicket and square leg. Though initially it looked like he was successful at that, Young sprinted towards his left before putting in a full-fledged dive.

The ball was very low and appeared to cross him and go past the boundary, but it stuck to his left hand as he ended just ahead of the rope. His teammate, who ran in from square leg, could not believe his eyes as he applauded Young’s superlative effort.

Though there were doubts initially in the batter’s mind, the replays showed the Kiwi batter pouching it cleanly with one hand, signalling his end. Young’s response was also such that the commentators mentioned that he might have surprised himself with the effort.

Unbelievable!!!
