HH vs MS | Twitter in disbelief as Meredith’s attempt to emulate Maxwell goes horribly wrong

Catches at the boundary need a calm head, and Riley Meredith showed how not to take one at the ropes during the BBL knockout against Melbourne Stars. The Hobart Hurricanes pacer caught the ball and threw it up before going outside the cushion, but was unable to complete the catch, giving away a six.

‌Hobart Hurricanes rode on Beau Webster (47 off 26) and Nikhil Chaudhary (24 off 11) to put on a commanding 114/5 against Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League knockout in Hobart on Wednesday. With persistent rain reducing the contest to 10 overs a side, the pair smashed six sixes, plundering 50 runs in the last three overs, to put the Stars under the cosh.

With the visitors enduring a slow start at the Bellerive Oval, getting to 9/1 at the end of the two-over powerplay mark, rain halted proceedings yet again to revise the target to 85 in seven overs. The Stars kept themselves in contention, courtesy of Joe Clarke’s enterprising cameo of 31 from 17 balls, as the target came to 26 off the last six balls, with skipper Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell at the crease.

With captain Ben McDermott going to Mitchell Owen for the last over, Stoinis chased a short and wide ball first up to bring on a full-blooded cut shot. Riley Meredith did everything right as he sprinted towards his right from deep point to catch the ball, but his momentum meant he could not stop in front of the boundary cushion.

The pacer rightly threw the ball up in the air as he crossed the ropes, but since he was in motion, the ball stayed outside the boundary, albeit in the air. As a result, he could not reach the ball as he tried to jump in and complete the catch in the second attempt. The ball pitched outside, with the umpire signalling a six, as the devastated MEredith lay over the ropes, hiding his face on it in despair.

Twitter was in splits as the fielder tried channeling his inner-Maxwell before making a meal of a tricky chance to keep the Stars in the game.
