The T20I series between India and New Zealand had started with a bang. And it seems that the young Indian side has been able to compete well against the Kiwis, the same side which defeated India in the ODI series. This comes as a big positive for the team ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026.

Moreover, Abhishek Sharma played a vital role for the team in this game. Giving a rapid fire start and scoring runs quickly helped India to reach a competitive total. Talking about his performances, Aakash Chopra also said that he would be very important to the Indian team in the T20 World Cup.

1. Abhishek's Knock Powers India to Win

The Indian team is now back to as it was before the Asia Cup. Fans watched Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma opening for the team, followed by Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, and more. Filled with power hitters, India was batting first in this match.

And Abhishek Sharma was able to give a quick start to the team like he always does. He went on to score 84 runs off 35 balls with 5 fours and 8 sixes, which helped India to reach a competitive total. Rinku Singh also scored 44 runs off 20 balls in his comeback match, as India posted 238 runs on the board with the loss of 7 wickets.

The Indian team also had a good start while defending the target. Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya took wickets in the first two overs of the game, putting the pressure on the Kiwis. Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman played a settled knock, but it was nowhere enough to help the team by improving the required run rate.

Phillips got dismissed after scoring 78 runs off 40 balls, as New Zealand fell short to win the game. Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner tried their best for the win, but eventually lost their wicket in the death overs. As a result, India was able to win the game by 48 runs, and took a lead of 1-0 in the series.

Abhishek Sharma won the Player of the Match award for his blistering knock. In his T20I career, he has now received his 5th Player of the Match award, showcasing his consistency for the Indian team. With the T20 World Cup coming closer, his form remains a big positive for the Indian team.

2. Aakash Chopra Praises Abhishek

Aakash Chopra, former cricketer and now a cricket analyst, talked about the form of Abhishek Sharma. After the match between India and New Zealand, he posted a video on his YouTube channel. There he talked about the match performances by each player, and how Abhishek Sharma continues to be the trump card for the Indian cricket team.

He said, “How well he plays. He hits sixes so easily. Two things make him extremely special. One is, where will a bowler bowl with the new ball? He keeps six players on the off side, keeps a slip, and looks for swing. So he will bowl outside the off-stump only, on the fourth to sixth stump.”

Aakash Chopra also commented on his bowling style. Last night when Axar Patel got injured, Abhishek Sharma completed his over. While it was at the time when New Zealand had two set batsmen, both of them still failed to score boundaries against Abhishek Sharma, who is a part-time bowler.

Chopra said, “He will bowl either full or short, but keep it on that side only. He (Abhishek) goes over cover or hits straight sixes. Then the bowler comes around the stumps and tries to bowl on the body. He plays well on that side in any case. So the fact that he can play so well on the off side constantly and can consistently hit such good sixes, you have to doff your hat.”

Aakash Chopra also revealed what Sunil Gavaskar thinks about Abhishek Sharma. He said, “Then if you come slightly on his body, he hits on the leg side. He is absolutely stellar. So one should clap for him. If he remains in this form, he is the guy. We called him the X-factor and Sunny ji said he is X, Y, Z, and all factors. I will say yes, sir. He is that kind of a player.”
