Suresh Raina Discusses What Gives Shubman Gill an Edge as India Captain

Shubman Gill will be leading the Indian cricket team in the 2027 World Cup. With Gill as a captain in the ODI side, the Indian team has not been able to do much well in bilateral series. However, Suresh Raina believes there is an X factor, which gives Gill an advantage.

Shubman Gill, the current captain of the Indian team in Tests and ODIs, still has a lot to prove as a captain. Even though he has done well for the team in the Test format, the questions still remain on his captaincy in the ODI format. Gill was announced as a captain before the India tour of Australia, as he replaced Rohit Sharma.

Even after winning an ICC trophy as a captain, Rohit Sharma was sacked immediately when the Indian team for the Australia tour was announced. With Gill as a captain, the Indian team has not been able to do much well in the ODI format. Since he was named as a captain, India has won only one series against South Africa, which he missed out due to a neck injury.

Amidst all the doubts and criticism over his captaincy, former Indian cricketer, Suresh Raina, has backed Shubman Gill. He said, “For Shubman Gill, captaining India in a World Cup, having Rohit & Virat alongside him will be a huge advantage. Their experience will be invaluable on and off the field.”

Our Take

Suresh Raina was not wrong when he said that the experience of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be a key for Gill. Ever since he has been named as the captain of the Indian team, India has won only a few ODIs. And in those games, it is either Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli who has won the POTM award.
