Five most memorable Merseyside Derbies of recent times
Whenever the cross-town rivals Liverpool and Everton face each other, it always turns out to be an eventful clash filled with emotions, flying tackles and the chants from the fans on both ends. Ahead of Monday's clash at Goodison Park, we bring to you the top five Merseyside derbies of recent times.
The Merseyside Derby has been a long-standing rivalry for more than 100 years. This weekend matchup marks the 227th the sides will be facing each other. We all know what happens when these Premier League giants collide. Goals, drama, emotions and of course red cards. So before the highly charged fixture begins, we bring to you our top five picks from the recent memory of this historical rivalry.
Liverpool 4-0 Everton (2015-16):
The 226th derby belonged to the Reds as they hammered the 10-men Everton side 4-0 at Anfield. Divock Origi opened the scorings for the Reds, a free header from Mamadou Sakho doubled it by half-time. Daniel Sturridge grabbed the third before Phillipe Coutinho curled in one to complete the emphatic win for the reds.
Liverpool had 37 shots, 13 of which were on target as compared to Everton 3 shots - all of which were off-target. The victory also marked the first match in charge for Jurgen Klopp. Surely, he was a happy man.
Everton 2-0 Liverpool (2010-11):
Everton’s last victory came against Liverpool came in 2010. Liverpool endured a difficult season in 2010 with Roy Hodgson as their manager. With men such as Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano
Everton took the full advantage of skittish Liverpool as they easily cruise past the reds in the 2-0 victory.
Liverpool 3-0 Everton (2011-12):
Former captain Steven Gerrard celebrated his 400th premier league appearance in the best possible manner. The midfielder netted a hat-trick as Liverpool saw off Everton. The Reds dominated the game from start to finish. The scoreline could have been much more embarrassing for the blue of Merseyside had Tim Howard not made some fine saves.
It was also the first hat-trick in the Merseyside Derby since Ian Rush's four at 5-0 win at Goodison Park in 1982.
Liverpool 3-3 Everton (2013-14):
An epitome of a Merseyside derby classic. It was see-saw encounter which looked to go in Everton’s way before Daniel Sturridge came off the bench to grab a point for the Reds.
Phillipe Coutinho opened the scoring with just five minutes into the match. The lead didn't last long as Ross Barkley equalised after three minutes. A brilliant free kick from Luis Suarez restored the lead for the reds before Romelu Lukaku scored two within ten minutes to give Everton the lead. A late header from Daniel Sturridge settled the thrilling encounter for a draw between the local rivals.
Liverpool 3-2 Everton(2001-02):
Perhaps, Gary McAllister's greatest moment in Liverpool shirt came in the Merseyside derby in 2001. The match justified the “friendliness” between the two teams as a frantic flurry of 12 yellow cards were shown in the match.
The game looked set for a draw before McAllister happened. A 44-yard free-kick in the injury time saw the Reds seal off the incredible match, leaving the Everton fans in despair.
