Stephen Constantine has admitted that his team need to learn from their setbacks from the first game against Sri Lanka as they head into the second match against the Maldives. Constantine wants his players to play some smart football and the youngsters to challenge the senior players.

India made their way to a strong opening day in the ongoing 2018 SAFF Championship with a 2-0 win against the Sri Lankan football team. Goals from Ashique Kuraniyan (35’) and Lallinzuala Chhangte (47’) ensured that Stephen Constantine’s team recorded a commanding win against the Lankans and took the three points in the bargain as well.

But Constantine admitted that the U-23 team needed to learn from their mistakes as they head into their second match against Maldives on Sunday. The British coach wants his young squad to be smarter and challenge for a spot in the finals.

“We need to rectify the mistakes before the next match. We started off with a good win but I am not happy with the performance. We could have scored quite a few goals more.

“We have to learn how to play more smartly. We can do much better than this. Given the fact that the players are young, you can’t expect the consistency every time. Anyway, a win is always the most important aspect of the game and we move on from here,” Constantine told PTI sources.

Constantine also said that there should be more players in the Indian dugout to put pressure on the seniors in the squad ahead of next year’s Asian Cup in UAE.

“We have already qualified to the AFC Asian Cup and from now, we need to have more players in the pipeline so that we can put pressure on senior players to push themselves more. We have just preferred to stick to our ideas to provide these young boys with an opportunity to get some more international game time,” Constantine added.
