With Luke Shaw, Brandon Williams and Aaron Wan-Bissaka ahead of him in the pecking order, Ashley Young has found game-time hard to come by with Manchester United set to release him next summer. The club captain is out of contract at the end of the season and is yet to open talks over a new deal.

The 34-year-old was handed a one-year extension by the club last season by the club but reports indicate that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to clear out the deadwood and Young is on the list. The Norwegian manager is also looking to add atleast three new names over the next two windows which has seen the Evening Standard report that the Young expects to be released by the club.

He’s struggled to get on the team-sheet so far this season despite injuries to Luke Shaw, leaving the club short of a left-back. However, instead, Solskjaer has opted to use youth star Brandon Williams as cover while Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s £50 million summer move means that he’s now the first-choice right-back. Diogo Dalot steps in as his cover with the young Portuguese playing in Europa League but Young has made 15 appearances this season including three in the Europa League.

Things have changed in the Premier League with the former Aston Villa man making just 11 appearances in the league and Solskjaer all but admitted that he expects a few players to be happy with a bench role.
