Sunil Chhetri has said that he sees a lot of desire among the new-comers in the national football team for the King’s Cup football tournament which starts today in Buriram, Thailand. Chhetri has added that his main focus now is to be in sync with new coach Igor Stimac as soon as possible.

As many as six newcomers were named in the 23-member Indian football team for the King’s Cup after the national camp in Delhi under the new coach Igor Stimac. The Indian team will take on Curacao in the first game today and Chhetri hailed the desire of the new boys in the team ahead of their first big event in their career.

“I see a lot of desire among the new boys. Who knows, a few boys could start for the senior team against Curacao. So it will be a huge moment for them. I remember how I felt when I made my debut and it’s truly magical, a moment you never forget. I wish them all the luck and really hope they do well,” Chhetri said ahead of India’s first match, reported PTI.

“The camaraderie between the players is really good. I’m glad to see the boys gelling well, pushing each other to get better, and inculcating a number of good habits.”

India are going to play an international game since January. They had last played in the AFC Asian Cup after which their former head coach Stephen Constantine had stepped down from the helm. Stimac was appointed last month as the head coach and Chhetri also spoke about the new man in charge of the national side ahead of the first tournament under the new coach.

“I want the coach stays satisfied to as much as possible of how we are understanding what he wants. My main focus right now with the new coach is to be sync with him as soon as possible, and as less time as possible. On our way to do that we definitely want to win games. No team ever plays to lose, and neither do we,” Chhetri explained.
