Reports | Churchill Brothers FC join protest, to pull out of Super Cup
Churchill Brothers have decided to join the protest against AIFF along with seven other I-League clubs by deciding to pull out of the Super Cup. The tensions started when the AIFF failed to acknowledge a letter sent by the clubs and the teams have no clarity about their and the league’s future.
The Goa-based club - Churchill Brothers have informed about their decision to join the other clubs in their withdrawal from the Super Cup through a "press release" to AIFF (All India Football Federation) general secretary Kushal Das, despite a warning of placing sanctions. The email was also marked to the seven other protesting clubs. However, the club has stated that they are still open for talks.
"Each of our clubs are keen to play and win at every level for our fans and players. We hope that the AIFF will take necessary steps to address our issues and therefore enable the conduct of the tournament. Whenever our concerns are addressed, we are ready to play and look forward to the growth of this beautiful game in our country," the club said in the letter to AIFF on Thursday, reported TOI.
After Churchill's decision, only two I-League clubs remain in the Super Cup. The Indian Arrows, revived by the AIFF in 2017 after their disbanding, do not have a choice. Real Kashmir FC have decided that they will go ahead with their participation. Shillong Lajong FC, which is owned by a committee member of the AIFF, did not qualify for the tournament anyways.
The 2019 Super Cup at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar is scheduled to be played between March 15 and April 13 and this is the second edition of the knock-out tournament involving the teams from both I-League and the ISL.
