Jurgen Klopp gives us the freedom to roam the field, says Trent Alexander-Arnold
Trent Alexander-Arnold has said that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has given both his full-backs the freedom to roam the pitch with others covering for them. Both Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson flourished last season finishing with a combined 29 assists and were amongst the club’s best players.
While it did look for a moment last season that Andrew Robertson would break the Premier League’s record for most assists by a defender, three assists in the final two games changed everything. It saw Trent Alexander-Arnold finish with 12 assists and in the process, the young full-back broke the record for most assists by a defender in a 38 game season. Robertson would finish his season with 11 assists, on par with Leighton Baines and Andy Hinchliffe’s former record.
It was an exceptional display of attacking prowess by two defenders and it was the first time in the history of the Premier League that two defenders from the same team registered double figures for assists. They have continued that form this season with four assists to their name in eight Premier League appearances and Trent Alexander-Arnold has attributed that to Jurgen Klopp. In an interview, the 21-year-old went on to admit that without the support of the German and their team-mates, neither full-back would have been able to even come close to the record.
"It's good to be able to help the team with creating chances and wanting to give good service to the attackers to go and score goals. Eventually how you win games is scoring goals. I think as full-backs, me and Robbo, we want to do that as much as possible and the manager gives us that freedom to do that and doesn't limit us and tells us we have to stay back,” said the 21-year-old to Premier League Productions.
“He gives us that freedom of being able to go forward. The midfield helps us out a lot by covering us and allowing us to get forward. It's a team effort and the lads are in the box all the time to be able to put the chances away," concluded Alexander-Arnold.
