Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has claimed that he would be interested in being their director of football but only after he gains a little more experience. The Ajax CEO has overseen a remarkable rise for the Dutch giants with him playing a key role involving their youth academy.

With the Red Devils intensely searching for a director of football to take some of the pressure of Ed Woodward and rumours have run wild over who joins the club with a few big names linked. Reports have indicated that the club has so far considered Mike Phelan, Rio Ferdinand, Monchi, Luis Campos and even Edwin van der Sar but Manchester United haven’t stumbled upon the right man. However, the Dutch legend has finally admitted that he is interested in becoming their next director of football.

Van der Sar, the former United goalkeeper, is currently the CEO at Ajax where he has overseen a remarkable rise for the Dutch giants. The rise that includes a Champions League semi-final, two consecutive Eredivise titles and a second place finish since Van der Sar took over. However, while he went on to admit that he would be interested in the role at Old Trafford, Van der Sar also added that he needs more experience.

"Besides my family, the wife, kids and friends, I have two loves in my life - Ajax, who scouted me and gave me the chance to shine in the world of football and Manchester United, who helped me to develop even at the end of my career. Of course I'd be interested in a position, but at first I think I need to learn a little bit more here at Ajax and develop myself even further. Let's see what the future brings, United is a fantastic club, with a great following all over the world," he told Planet Futbol TV.

The 48-year-old spent the final six years of his career at Old Trafford, winning four Premier League titles, one Champions League crown and two EFL Cups to add to his myriad of trophies for Ajax. That combined with him doing well at Ajax as their CEO has led many critics to believe that the Dutch legend would be perfect for Manchester United. But Van der Sar went on to admit that while he might be suited to the role United are looking for someone to do more than just be the CEO.

"I'm the chief executive at Ajax, United are looking for a different position, a director of football, it's a different role. I know a little bit about football of course,” concluded Van der Sar.
