Would loved to have won World Cup, admits Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi had admitted that winning an international trophy with his country Argentina is of utmost importance to him with the Argentine losing in four separate finals which includes the 1-0 loss to Germany in 2014. The superstar has won everything for Barcelona but has struggled internationally.
Lionel Messi is Argentina’s all-time leading scorer but he is yet to win a trophy with the country, with his only international honours the U20 World Cup in 2005 and a gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics. The Barcelona forward has come extremely close to winning an international trophy on four separate occasions as they were beaten in the 2014 World Cup finals and in three Copa America finals in 2007, 2015 and 2016.
That has seen Messi heavily criticized in his homeland for not being able to transfer domestic success onto the international stage. The success they’re talking about happens to be an unbelievable array of silverware at Camp Nou. The Argentine has collected 34 trophies at Barcelona so far, including 4 UEFA Champions Leagues, 10 La Liga titles and 6 Copa Del Reys.
But in a recent interview when he was asked whether he would swap that Barcelona trophy cabinet for an international trophy the Argentine went on to admit that he wouldn’t want to change a thing. Messi went on to admit that while he does believe that a few things that happened were not to fair to either him or Argentina, it's in the past and he's always going to keep trying to help them win something.
“I would've loved to be a world champion. But I don't think I would change anything else in my career to be one. This is what I was given, what God gave me. It is what it is. I couldn't dream of everything that I experienced after. It was far bigger than anything I could've imagined. I would have loved to have won the world cup but I wouldn’t change anything. What happened is that I’ve lived many things with the Argentina national team and I’ve had to live many things which weren’t fair but in the end, I tried and I will keep trying,” Messi told TyC Sports.
