New NorthEast United FC coach Robert Jarni has revealed that it was Indian football team national coach and old friend, Igor Stimac who had convinced him to take up the managerial role. Jarni further stated that Stimac has been a good coach and India would be doing well under his tutelage.

The new Highlanders coach would have a tough task at his hands as he would be starting life in the club after a successful season by Eelco Schattorie. And he has stated that Stimac played a crucial role in convincing him to take up the job with the Indian Super League franchise.

“Of course I knew him because we live just 200 metres apart in Croatia and as soon as I got an offer from NorthEast United, I told him. Igor Stimac had only good things to say about India and Indian football. So I took the decision to come here,” said Jarni, reported Goal.

While Jarni has been waiting for his test, Stimac has already been throwing right into the gruel. Though India have shown more intent and a new attacking brand of football under the Croatian, results haven’t gone their way and Stimac has been under criticism for the same.

However, Jarni sounded extremely confident that the Blue Tigers would be doing well under his former teammate and he just needed more time. “He was a very good player and also a very good coach now. He is a great leader. I think India can do very well under his leadership but everyone needs time, you have to give him time,” said Jarni.

After a disheartening defeat to Oman, where India conceded two quick goals after leading for the 82 minutes, Stimac would be taking his side to Qatar, the hosts of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The match has been scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 10.
