Frank Lampard is teaching us how to score goals, says Ross Barkley
Ross Barkley insists that Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has been working with midfielders to score more goals and be more productive in the final third. Barkley has assumed the role of a regular starter at the Stamford Bridge under the management of Frank Lampard, making nine appearances so far.
Ross Barkley was in the news headlines after missing a penalty against Valencia in the UEFA Champions League, but he was quick to make amends for that as he scored for Chelsea in the 7-1 thrashing of Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup fixture. After the game, Barkley was asked on how Frank Lampard trains and helps develop his players to which he replied that the former Derby County manager trains midfielders individually. The Chelsea legend, scored well over 170 goals in the Premier League alone and that's something that many expect him to pass on to, with Barkley reporting that it's exactly what Lampard has been doing.
"The arrival time in the box to get goals. You see Mason from midfield getting goals, you've seen N'Golo get a goal against Liverpool. For midfielders, it's really important to get goals and I scored on Wednesday. We're early on into the season but to get shots away early doors for me, Mason, even Kova [Matteo Kovacic] and to continue to work hard on the training pitch if you're not in the side, to put 100 per cent in and you'll get your chances and you'll get into the side," said Barkley reports the BBC.
"I'm enjoying it. I'm working really hard. [I'm] in the England side and getting game time but I'm continuing to work hard with the manager on the training pitch helping each individual through the experiences he had on the pitch as a player. It's helping us all develop really well," said Barkley.
Barkley has popped up into Gareth Southgate’s plans featuring in four all four European qualifiers. His teammate Ruben Loftus-Cheek has also been one of Southgate’s favourites. Barkley also spoke to Sky Sports about the competition he faces at club and country level from Loftus-Cheek and others.
"If you're playing for a big side like myself, you're always going to have competition for places. It's normal. "That's why you come to teams like this because the squad that you've got as a whole, you're going to all help each other to win a trophy and to get better over the years. With the likes of Ruben [Loftus-Cheek] coming back there's competition for places and there's versatility in some of the midfielders that can play in higher positions up the pitch as well, so it adds great balance for the squad," said Barkley
