When the 2025 summer transfer window heated up, Manchester United moved swiftly to secure 22-year-old striker Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, fending off competition from Newcastle. United agreed to a deal worth £66.4 million plus £7.4 million in add-ons, with the player set for a medical in England. Newcastle had an earlier £78 million bid accepted, but Sesko made it clear he preferred a move to Old Trafford.

However, former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders believes United missed an opportunity by not pursuing Darwin Nunez, who is set to leave Liverpool for Al Hilal in a £46 million deal, potentially rising to £56 million with add-ons. Saunders argued that Nunez, despite his inconsistency, is a proven goal scorer and would have been a more economical and experienced option than Sesko.

Last season, Nunez scored just five Premier League goals, while Sesko managed 13 in the Bundesliga and four in the Champions League. United’s poor finishing in the previous season, which ended with a 15th-place finish, made signing a new striker a top priority. Alongside Sesko, United have already brought in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo and are now also targeting Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba to further strengthen their squad.
