Former Tottenham assistant Jesus Perez revealed that Mauricio Pochettino refused to issue a public statement in 2014 after Danny Welbeck joined Arsenal for £16 million. Spurs wanted to downplay missing out, but Pochettino avoided it to protect 20 year old Harry Kane’s confidence and long term development.

For the first time, Mauricio Pochettino’s former assistant Jesus Perez has revealed how a behind-the-scenes decision at Tottenham nearly changed Harry Kane’s career. Speaking on the High Performance Podcast, Perez explained that during the 2014 summer transfer window, Spurs were trying to sign Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck. However, Welbeck chose to join Arsenal in a £16 million deal instead. Had Tottenham secured him, Kane, who was only 20 at the time, might have been pushed further down the pecking order behind Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor.

After missing out on Welbeck, Tottenham’s hierarchy reportedly wanted Pochettino to release a public statement claiming he was happy with his existing strikers. The aim was to avoid embarrassment and suggest the club had not needed another forward. However, Pochettino refused, believing such a statement would make Kane feel unwanted and damage his confidence.

Perez said Pochettino prioritised protecting Kane’s mindset and showing trust in him. By staying silent, he avoided giving the impression that the club preferred another striker. This decision helped Kane feel valued and supported. Perez believes that this unseen act of management played a key role in Kane’s development and eventual rise into one of the Premier League’s most successful goal scorers.
