After winning their first two matches by close margins, Dabang Delhi KC managed to register a comprehensive victory against neighbouring Haryana Steelers in the first Northern Derby of the season. It was the defensive unit led by Joginder Narwal that stood up for the team from the national capital.

Dabang Delhi had only one win out of the six games against Haryana Steelers prior to the last night’s game. Even going by the form of both the teams, Delhi had two close wins against Telugu Titans and Tamil Thalaivas while Haryana Steelers had managed to get the better of Puneri Paltan quite convincingly in their first outing.

However, in the Super Sunday encounter last evening, it was the Joginder Narwal-led Dabang Delhi that proved to be too hot to handle for Dharmaraj Cheralathan and co. in Mumbai. If we compare the performance of both the teams, the raiding unit did pretty well for both sides with the Naveens (primary raiders of Dabang Delhi and Haryana Steelers) leading the charge on both sides of the match. It was touted as the battle of the Naveens as Vikash Kandola, who is the main raider for Haryana, didn’t take the mat for the second game in a row. Naveen Kumar from Delhi managed to get 10 raid points in the match while the Haryana raider got nine yesterday.

However, going for rash tackles and defensive lapses throughout the game mattered the most for Haryana. It was the large number of unsuccessful tackles by the Haryana players that took the team to the defeat in the end. In head to head battle, Delhi, with Joginder Narwal, Ravinder Pahal, Saeid Gaffari, and Vishal Mane, collected nine tackle points in total compared to only four by Haryana.

In the first raid for Delhi, it was Chandran Ranjit who caught opposition skipper Dharmaraj Cheralathan napping at the right corner position and sent him off the mat with a toe touch. Although Naveen and Vinay looked good in raiding for Haryana in the start of the game, the defence kept on leaking points with some very rash tackle attempts in the first half itself. Pretty much like the first raid for Ranjit, Naveen also managed to get out Cheralathan in his first raid.

Although we can’t take anything away from the efforts of Naveen and Ranjit as it was a rare occasion when both the Delhi raiders got their Super 10s in the game yesterday, a lot of points were gifted to them by the poor tackle attempts by the Steelers. One such example is the Do or Die for which Naveen had entered the Haryana mat. It was skipper Cheralathan who came out of the chain and went for a block and failed to stop Naveen. The Delhi raider had also got a touch on Vikas Kale and returned with two points in a raid in which he was supposed to be under some pressure.

In the first Do or die raid in the second half of the match, Naveen managed to get two points again thanks to ambitious tackle attempt by Vikram Kandola and Kuldeep Singh. That was needless again from Haryana as it was the raider’s headache whether to take a point or get out. Not only for Naveen but the Haryana defence messed it up when Ranjit went for a Do or die raid as well. With 12 minutes remaining in the match, Ranjit attempted a kick on Cherala at the left corner but failed. However, his momentum took him into the lobby without touch and Cheralathan also had stepped out.

Unaware of the fact, the other three defenders tried dashing Ranjit off the mat and stepped into the lobby in the process. This ensured Haryana gifting away four points as all the four players on the mat were declared out of bounds in exchange of Ranjit who also got self out. Thanks to the poor defence of the Steelers, Naveen was not tackled even once in the entire game and Ranjit had three unsuccessful raids only.

These instances show the lack of game awareness by the Haryana defenders throughout the match in which Delhi managed to collect easy points in important raids. On the other hand, Delhi defence was well balanced last evening. The decision of playing Iranian Saeid Gaffari at the left cover in place of Anil Kumar worked well for them. Gaffari looked powerful with his thigh hold and the combination with right cover Mane also looked balanced for Delhi. The Iranian managed to bag four tackle points and alongside Mane, the duo registered six points.

Gaffari had a great contribution to bring Delhi back from the all-out situation in the first half. With around six minutes remaining before the break, Delhi had three defenders on the mat and it was Naveen who had come for the raid. Joginder Narwal at his usual left corner position went ahead with a solo tackle attempt by holding on to Naveen’s foot. However, when the raider was about to come out of that, it was the Iranian who came in running to dash the raider off the mat. Naveen was close to the midline and Haryana even decided to challenge the decision after the officials had given it in Delhi’s favour. The replays, however, showed that he was off the mat and the hand came from out and Delhi earned the Super Tackle from which the revival started from the Dabang unit.

Delhi had the three experienced defenders in their team last year as well. This year, apart from keeping Joginder, Pahal and Mane, they have roped in Gaffari and Anil who are good enough to be in the cover and that was clearly visible in the last evening’s encounter. Delhi’s although don’t have young blood in their defence, it still can be dangerous for all the opposition raiders in the league.
