17-year-old Prithvi Shaw has broken Sachin Tendulkar’s record to become the youngest centurion on his Duleep Trophy debut as his 154-run knock helped India Red finish in a dominating position against India Blue. Tendulkar had centuries in all three-Ranji, Irani and Duleep Trophy before he was 18.

Mumbai’s Prithvi Shaw’s debut ton helped India Red finish the opening day of the Duleep Trophy 2017-18 final at 258-2, against India Blue on Monday. His 154 runs take him past Sachin Tendulkar as the youngest cricketer to score a century in Duleep Trophy debut. Shaw has also scored a century on his Ranji Trophy debut earlier this year.

Tendulkar held the record of being the youngest player to get centuries in all three domestic tournaments - Ranji Trophy, Irani Trophy and Duleep Trophy - before he turned 18. The Master Blaster had scored debut centuries in Ranji Trophy and Duleep trophy in the 1988-89 season, which was followed by a maiden century in the Irani Cup in the next season (1989-90).

India Red, led by Dinesh Karthik, made a strong start as Shaw opened with Akhil Herwadkar to put 74 runs on the board before Herwadkar was run-out for 25. Kolkata Knight Riders’ Surya Kumar Yadav came in next but was soon dismissed for 12 runs. Shaw then partnered with skipper Dinesh Kartik to ensure a strong finish on Day 1 as Shaw finished on 137 and Karthik on 86.

Shaw has previously shown signs of his mastery when he was in the news for scoring an astonishing 546 runs off 330 balls in a school match in Mumbai, which was recorded as the third highest score in any form of cricket. He was also good in India’s U-19 side’s recently-concluded tour of England where Shaw took part in the five Youth ODI matches. The right-handed batsman scored 21, 48, 26, 13 and 52 in the series.

The Mumbai batsman, who is touted by many to reach the level of Rohit Sharma, Vinod Kambli and even Sachin Tendulkar, has played two first-class matches so far where he scored 239 runs at an average of 59.75. Shaw has one century and one half-century to his name.
