Washington Sundar, Basil Thampi get maiden India call-up for Sri Lanka T20I

BCCI has announced the squad for the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka in which Washington Sundar, Jaydev Unadkat, Deepak Hooda and Basil Thampi have been called up for the 1st time to play for India. Rohit Sharma will lead the team as Virat Kohli has been rested ahead of the South Africa tour.

Sri Lanka is in India to play a full series which includes three Tests and the same number of ODIs and T20I. The All-India Senior Selection Committee met today in New Delhi to pick the team for the upcoming T20I series. 

Washington Sundar, who had an impressive Indian Premier League earlier this year, continued his exceptional form in domestic cricket which seemed to have impressed the selectors. 

Basil Thampi who was also brilliant in the IPL for Gujarat Lions as well as with the opportunities he got with the India A side was also called up for the T20I squad.

"We feel Basil and Siraj are more for suited for T20 format at the moment," MSK Prasad, the chairman of selectors, said about the decision as quoted by Cricbuzz.

Unadkat, who ended the IPL as the second-highest wicket-taker behind Bhuvneshwar Kumar with 24 wickets from 12 games for Rising Pune Supergiant at an average of 13.41, was also named in the squad.

Hardik Pandya, who was rested for the three-match Test series but was named for the ODI squad, also features in the T20I series squad. 

Shikhar Dhawan, who is part of the ODI squad, has been rested for the three T20I matches ahead of the all-important South Africa tour.

The first T20i of the series will be played on December 20 in Cuttack. The remaining matches will be played on December 22 and 24 in Indore and Mumbai respectively.
