MSK Prasad rubbishes rumours: There was no pressure on Dhoni to resign from captaincy
India’s chairman of selectors MSK Prasad has rubbished rumours about the selection committee forcing MS Dhoni to relinquish limited-overs captaincy so that Virat Kohli can take over. Prasad said that it was Dhoni’s “personal decision”, although he said it “didn't come as a surprise” to him.
Earlier, a report by the Hindustan Times had claimed that MS Dhoni, who led India in a record 331 games across all formats, did not stand down as limited-overs captain by choice, but was asked to go. The newspaper had insisted that the selection committee had brainstormed a roadmap to the 2019 World Cup, and they did not see 35-year-old Dhoni leading the team at that point in time.
However, MSK Prasad has now dismissed those claims and stated, "There was no pressure on Dhoni to resign from captaincy. It was his personal decision. He informed me during the Ranji Trophy semi-final between Jharkhand and Gujarat in Nagpur,” reported News18.
Prasad went on to thank Dhoni for his contribution so far and has stated that the former skipper now has the important task of guiding Kohli on the field.
"Dhoni is an honest man and the decision didn't come as a surprise. It was timed perfectly as Kohli needs enough matches to settle down going into the Champions Trophy. I thank Dhoni for his contribution, but his job doesn't end here and he needs to guide Kohli," Prasad said, reported News18.
