Virat Kohli: Lack of One day cricket not a concern

Virat Kohli has claimed that he is not worried at the lack of ODI matches India are playing in the build-up to the ICC Champions Trophy adding that playing T20 games would help the team improve their bowling skills in the death overs. India are not scheduled to play a single One-day game until June.

Virat Kohli’s India succumbed to a first ever home loss after their defeat to England by 5 runs in the third ODI game in Kolkata. Even the best efforts of Kedar Jadhav and Hardik Pandya were not enough to save India from their first home defeat under Virat Kohli's leadership.

The biggest drawback for India comes in the form of the number of One-day matches they will play between now and the Champions Trophy. India are set to play only Tests, Twenty20 Internationals, and Indian Premier League games over the next few months, leading up to the quadrennial event.

But Kohli said that he wasn’t worried about the lack of 50-over matches as the shortest format would only help India improve their death bowling concerns.

“The more T20 cricket we play, we’ll get better at death-bowling. That’s one thing I feel will be our advantage. As far as batting is concerned, the one area we look to focus on would be maintaining our batting techniques. And just using T20 cricket and ODI cricket as an extension of your Test batting – not necessarily be reckless out there and slog every ball we play," Kohli said during the post-match press conference.

“Whatever areas or concerns we have, we’ll address them. First we didn’t have an opening problem, it was an issue with the middle order. Now the middle order has been sorted. We have very good openers with us. It’s not a case where we have to find openers. You have to give chances for people to come back into form.

“I think if we back our openers and give them confidence, it’s all about one or two innings in international cricket. Once you get the flow, everything clicks. Last Champions Trophy is where we saw Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan as an opening-pair revelation. We have played only at 70-75 percent potential as a batting unit. If we play at 100% I don’t know how many runs we can score,” the Indian skipper concluded.
