Virender Sehwag has been appointed as head of cricket operations and strategy by his former IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab. Sehwag was appointed as a mentor by Kings XI after his retirement, and the dasher has been handed with more responsibilities after Sanjay Bangar quit as head coach last month

Sehwag played for Kings XI for two seasons before retiring from all forms of the game in 2015. The 38-year-old was appointed as the mentor ahead of the last edition where he was working alongside head coach Bangar.

Bangar, who is the batting coach of the Indian team, vacated his post last month.

"It is such an honour to lead this team and mentor our young talent. Kings XI Punjab is a team very close to my heart and I am looking forward to a great season with them," Sehwag said in a press release.

Kings XI are yet to win the IPL and finished the last two seasons at the bottom of the table. However, the team management have retained their faith in their players, having let go of only four out of the 23 players during the transfer window. This will be the first real test of Sehwag’s managerial capabilities, though, as he looks to pull the team out of the dump from the sidelines..
