Kumar Sangakkara reveals Brian Lara was Rahul Dravid’s favourite player
It is hard to imagine that for any Indian cricket fan who has watched the game through the 1990s, he could have any other favourite player apart from Sachin Tendulkar. In 2011, Kumar Sangakkara reveals that Rahul Dravid had told him, during a game, that his favourite batsman was Brian Lara.
On a video on streamable in 2011, Sangakkara, while talking at the MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture revealed the hilarious story. According to the former Sri Lankan captain, while playing in the Tsunami relief match, Dravid had told him that Lara was his favorite batsman instead of his compatriot Tendulkar
“This was during the Tsunami game at the MCG. I was in a side that was playing against Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar. And on my side, I had a very senior and great batsman from India and he was standing at slip and we were talking,” Sangakkara revealed.
“Sachin came batted got out and Brian Lara walks in and he tells me in a hushed voice, ‘ This is the guy. This is the man. This is my favourite batsman.’ And I said, ‘ What do you mean? Not Sachin?’ And he goes ‘No’.”
When pressed for the name of the player who had made the comments, Sangakkara at first refused to give it away. However, on Mark Nicholas’ insistence, he revealed, “It was Rahul Dravid.”
While Sachin did not actually play in the game and could not have since it was a World XI vs Asia XI, Sangakkara is hardly a kind of person who would make up a story out of thin air.
