BCCI to discuss Women's T20 league in IPL Governing Council meet
Reports have suggested that the BCCI will discuss the creation of a women's T20 league along with the player regulations and bidding procedure for the 2018 IPL. The GC meeting that will take place in New Delhi on October 24 could prove to be a watershed moment for Indian women's cricket.
A copy of the agenda for the meeting which was acquired by TOI lists, "IPL media rights ITT outcome, CSK legal opinion, Kochi settlement, player regulations 2018 onwards, Rajasthan Royals & Kings XI Punjab venues for the 2018 IPL, franchise owners' meeting, release fee to overseas boards for players availability, player injury compensation, and women's event," among other issues.Â
The women's team gained immense popularity after the World Cup, in England, for making it all the way to the final of the marquee event. Since then, a lot of people have advocated setting up a women's IPL, similar to the one Australia, with CoA member Diana Edulji acting as its biggest supporter. While in the past, the topic was not taken seriously, the performance in the World Cup might just be the push that was needed.Â
"It would be tough to find many big hitters in women's cricket. There's no point in launching it and failing in the process," a BCCI official was quoted saying by the TOI.
The biggest matter to be discussed though is the regulations for the 2018 IPL mega auction which could still possibly include all players open for bidding. However, BCCI officials have reportedly been taking to franchisees privately about whether they should be allowed to retain players. Some of the reports have also suggested that the BCCI
Another interesting point would be whether the CSK will get a green signal to transfer the ownership from the N Srinivasan-owned India Cements to Chennai Super Kings Cricket Ltd. The Supreme Court has made sure that Srinivasan would not be able to return to the BCCI if he still owns CSK so as not to have a conflict of interest.
