Tom Latham’s run-out was the turning point last night and although Jasprit Bumrah managed to uproot the stumps, MS Dhoni coaxed the young bowler for choosing to throw despite being a yard away, yet again. Bumrah had done the same against England, earlier this year, while running out Eoin Morgan.

With just 50 runs needed off five overs and six wickets in hand, the 3 ODI was New Zealand’s to lose and they did it in a dramatic fashion. Though the Kiwis didn’t see a batting collapse as such, Tom Latham’s wicket pretty much bottled it up for them.

With the dew hardly helping the Indian bowlers in the last 10 overs, India were ultra-focused in the field unwilling to give away any runs easily. Hence, when Colin de Grandhomme mixed up a run with Latham, there was only one outcome expected.

The dismissal saw some brilliant presence of mind from MS Dhoni and Jasprit Bumrah, but the youngster exhibited that he hasn’t got over the habit of risking to throw the ball instead rather than an assuring run up and dismantling the bails. Many blamed Grandhomme’s decision of not sacrificing his wicket in place of a well-settled Latham, who if stayed on the crease could have impacted the game more.

While it only shows Bumrah’s accuracy and confidence from close ranges, a perfectionist Dhoni still cajoled the bowler for not taking the assuring path. A similar incident had happened in January earlier this year during England’s visit when Bumrah chose to throw despite being just a yard away to dismiss Eoin Morgan in the second ODI in Cuttack.

However, Bumrah didn’t fail on either occasion and both the times India ended up winning and sealing the series.
